Start up of an Oxygen-Limited Nitrification Denitrification (OLAND) lab scale rotating biological contactor (RBC)

چکیده
In this study, the start-up of a lab-scale OLAND RBC was examined. After 221 days of operation, a maximum nitrogen removal rate of 2092 mg N/L.d or 6261 mg N/m.d and a removal efficiency of about 91% were observed. During six operational periods, different supplements were added to the influent and several operational variables were manipulated. The influence of adding hydroxylamine, Dranco compost extract and humic acids (HA) were investigated. The reactor achieved the highest removal rate at a dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration equal to 0.26 ± 0.10 mg O2/L and pH 8.0±0.1 while adding humic acids at 25 mg/L. High nitrite concentrations up to 200 mg N-NO2/L did not cause irreversible inhibition. Successful inhibition of nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB) was achieved by hydroxylamine addition at a concentration of 50 – 65 mg N-NH2OH/L in the influent.

A procedure for start-up of oxygen-limited autotrophic nitrification-denitrification (OLAND) in a lab-scale rotating biological contactor (RBC) is presented. In this one-step process, NH4+ is directly converted to N2 without the need for an organic carbon source. The approach is based on a sequential addition of two types of easily available biocatalyst to the reactor during start-up: aerobic n...
متن کاملDenitrification in a closed rotating biological contactor: effect of disk submergence
Several studies have employed rotating biological contactors (RBCs) for nitrogen removal. However, partially submersed disks are used for nitrification, while completely submersed disks are used for denitrification. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of disk submergence in the performance of rotating biological contactors, in terms of the denitrification process. Two RBCs...

Dairy wastewater is enriched in organic matter (about 45-72 g/l, COD) and also contains biodegradable carbohydrates. A three-stage system, NRBC was fabricated as a bench scale unit for lab experiments, to remove organic carbon from the whey. The fabricated NRBC had several advantages, such as quick start-up, high biomass concentration and was additionally able to handle high organic loading rat...

The present lab-scale research reveals the potential of implementation of an oxygen-limited autotrophic nitrification-denitrification (OLAND) system with normal nitrifying sludge as the biocatalyst for the removal of nitrogen from nitrogen-rich wastewater in one step. In a sequential batch reactor, synthetic wastewater containing 1 g of NH4+-N liter-1 and minerals was treated. Oxygen supply to ...
